چکیده

Measurements of intense, localized parallel electric fields are reported in association with inertial Alfvén waves and accelerated electron fluxes in a space plasma. The parallel electric fields are localized to several hundreds of Debye lengths and carry potentials on the order of the energy of the accelerated electron fluxes. The structures are observed at sharp maxima or minima of the perturbation magnetic field of the Alfvén wave, indicating high shear or rapid changes in the parallel current but near-zero, large-scale parallel currents. The localized electric-field structures are not entirely consistent with published double-layer models or observations in the aurora and may represent a new class of parallel electric-field structures or double layer, which are an important feature of the nonlinear evolution of Alfvén waves and of the electron acceleration processes. These data also represent a possible example of cross-scale coupling from Alfvén wavelengths to Debye scales. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1924495g

Propagation of kinetic Alfvén waves in the ionospheric Alfvén resonator in the presence of density cavities

[1] Recent observations of particle distributions that are narrow in pitch angle and broad in energy have suggested that kinetic Alfvén waves are a significant contributor to auroral particle acceleration. Oscillations at frequencies near 1 Hz are a natural consequence of the propagation of Alfvén waves in the strongly varying Alfvén speed profile above the auroral ionosphere, the so-called ion...

Comment on ‘‘Role of dispersive Alfvén waves in generating parallel electric fields along the Io-Jupiter fluxtube’’ by S. T. Jones

[1] The authors of a recent paper [Jones and Su, 2008] have used two-fluid plasma theory [e.g., Streltsov et al., 1998] to predict the parallel electric field strength of a shear Alfvén wave traveling through the Jovian magnetosphere from the vicinity of Io to the Jovian ionosphere. [2] Two-fluid analyses give adequate predictions for the parallel electric field strength Ek in plasma regimes wh...

Direct measurement of electron sloshing of an inertial Alfvén wave

We report laboratory measurements of the parallel current carried by suprathermal electrons associated with inertial Alfvén wave excitation in the laboratory. The experiments presented here use a novel wave absorption diagnostic that measures the suprathermal tails of the electron distribution parallel to the mean magnetic field. The diagnostic is used to probe the electron distribution as an i...

Laboratory Observations of Shear Alfvén Waves Launched from a Small Source

Shear Alfvén waves with transverse scales of electron skin-depth size are launched with a dual-disk antenna in the Large Plasma Device at UCLA. The waves are studied in the kinetic and inertial regimes. The kinetic shear Alfvén wave is observed for the first time and exhibits predicted radial structure. The perpendicular propagation of the wave is also studied for the first time, and it is foun...
